TOBAKKENS HISTORIE
Med en kapacitet på 1300 tilskuere er “Tobakken” i Esbjerg et af Danmarks største indendørs koncertsteder.
Bygningerne blev opført i 1896 og udvidet i 1910, 1914 og 1925. Det startede som en tobaksfabrik og var et vigtigt arbejdssted for lokalsamfundet og rummer en stor del af Esbjergs historie.

Da tobaksproduktionen var på sit højeste i midten af tyverne til midten af firserne, havde den ca. 700 medarbejdere.
I 1965 stoppede tobaksproduktionen, og fabrikken lukkede. Fra 1971 til 1989 blev bygningerne brugt som institution for pædagog og lærer uddannelsen.
Historisk arkiv for Esbjerg var også placeret i bygningerne.

I 1986, da uddannelserne flyttede til andre lokaler blev bygningerne aktivitetshus.
Der blev etableret workshops, konferencelokaler, teater og musiksal med plads til 200 tilskuere, øvelokaler for dramaskole og rockbands, og der blev også åbnet en café.

I den næste fase blev gården mellem bygningerne overdækket, så stedet kunne afholde koncerter i vintermånederne.
Det nye sted blev indviet den 7. december 1993. Det er nu ”Tobakkens” store scene.
I april 1994 blev den private fond “Multihus Tobaksfabrikken” oprettet, og i 2001 skiftede stedet til sit nuværende navn “Tobakken”.

 

TOBAKKEN HISTORY
With a capacity of 1300 spectators “Tobakken” in Esbjerg is one of Denmark’s largest indoor concert venues.
The buildings were constructed in 1896 and expanded in 1910, 1914 and 1925.
The development started as a tobacco factory and was an important work place for the local community and holds a great part of Esbjerg’s history.

When the tobacco production was at its peak in the mid-twenties to mid-forties, it had approx. 700 employees.
From 1965 the tobacco production slowed down, and the factory eventually closed down.

Then from 1971 to 1989 it became an educational institution hosting College for teachers and social therapists, Technical College, and it was also Council Centre for Educational resources and the History Archives for the city of Esbjerg was also located in the buildings.

In 1986 when the educational institutes relocated to other premises and the buildings became an Activity House.
Workshops was established, conference rooms, theatre and musichall with seating for 200 spectators, rehearsal rooms for drama school and rock bands.
Also a café was opened within the premises.

In the next phase the courtyard between the buildings was covered, to allow the venue to host concerts during the winter months. The new venue was inaugurated on the 7th of December 1993.
April 1994 the private foundation “Multihus Tobaksfabrikken” was established, and in 2001 the venue changed to its present name “Tobakken”.
